Brazil come away with a deserved, albeit underwhelming, win against a plucky Mexican side. Neymar created the chance out of a moment of brilliance for Jo to capitalize on. Overall however the Brazilian side looked poor in midfield with only a few moments of quality throughout the second half. Paulinho had a daring run up the middle which was his only shining moment in the match. Apart from him though the midfield was quiet and ineffectual. Oscar also had a subdued game and did not have any influence on the offensive flow.
Brazil will feel good about its chances as they make their way through this small tournament. A match with Spain is probably in the cards somewhere but until then Big Phil and the Selecao will be looking to solidify this lineup and work on that midfield possession.
Julio Cesar: 6 … did well with the Mexican chances on goal and cleared the defensive line when necessary
Marcelo: 6 … lost influence after his involvement with the first goal; was harassed constantly down his side by Mexicos speed
David Luiz 8 … a warrior like performance in the middle, bloody nose notwithstanding. Pushed ball and started offense when needed also.
Thiago Silva 7 … steady, stable performance.
Dani Alves 6 … like Marcelo, lost his way after Brazil’s opening 10 minute surge. Remained active with his crosses, although most of them were wayward.
Paulinho 5 … absent for much of the game save for a run in the second half. unable to dictate his way in the middle.
Luiz Gustavo 5 .. had a good opening 10 minutes but along with his counterpart lost ground and influence as the game wore on.
Oscar 5 … a poor game by the Chelsea player. He seemed a step slow and spent a lot of time marking men downfield which rendered him out of the offensive scheme
Hulk 6 … had some good touches and interplay with Neymar. Missed a make-able goal opportunity in the 2nd half.
Neymar 7 …man of the match with his world class goal in the first and brilliant setup in the second. his play acting was on display however and was a sore spot on an otherwise good night for the new Barcelona man.
Fred 5 … left stranded with a lack of service and crowded Mexican defense. I remain unconvinced hes the man to lead this attack.
